This study found that the social workers described the causes of youth delinquency as complex and highly dependent on individual factors. Several different aspects affect why a youth would become a delinquent. In this study, causes are mentioned such as family, school, and upbringing relationships, socioeconomic background, peers, structured and unstructured activities, and individual factors. At the same time, our result shows that social workers depict that crime is a choice you actively make, but it depends on the youth's risk factors. The social workers describe their preventive work at social services with early interventions, cooperation, and working on different preventive levels. The result appears that the preventative work has not been prioritized, and social workers are forced to put out fires in the most acute places. (Less)
