Abstract
This study investigates the factors influencing the intentions of onward migration from Sweden among individuals with a foreign background. Using a quantitative approach, the study examines how levels of integration, belief in the future, social belonging, and educational and occupational status relate to considerations of leaving the country. The analysis is based on data collected through a web-based survey (N = 107), using statistical methods including correlation, t-tests, chi-square, and non-parametric comparisons. The theoretical framework combines Lee’s push-pull migration theory with Bourdieu’s concepts of capital, habitus, and field, providing a multidimensional understanding of how structural conditions and individual perceptions... The theoretical framework combines Lee’s push-pull migration theory with Bourdieu’s concepts of capital, habitus, and field, providing a multidimensional understanding of how structural conditions and individual perceptions shape decisions related to further migration. The results show that a low sense of belonging and a pessimistic view of the future are significantly associated with higher onward migration intentions, while education and employment status show weaker or no direct correlations. Moreover, the findings indicate that a considerable share of those considering onward migration are highly educated and employed, suggesting a potential risk of skill loss in certain sectors. These results underline the importance of improving social integration and prospects to retain qualified individuals. The study contributes to the understanding of onward migration dynamics in the Swedish context and offers insights for integration and labour market policy. (Less)
