Abstract
This master’s thesis explores everyday life on the islands Asperö and Brännö, located in the South archipelago of Gothenburg. Although the islands are part of the Gothenburg municipality, their geographical separation creates unique, place-specific challenges, while also the boundedness of the islands' isolation fosters a sense of community among residents. The aim of the study is to gain an understanding of the islander's experiences of their way of living, more so than their place of living. Using a patchwork ethnographic approach, combining interviews, digital and participatory observation, the study investigates how islanders experience and navigate daily life. The findings highlight the islanders’ capacity for local mobilization,... (More)

Using a patchwork ethnographic approach, combining interviews, digital and participatory observation, the study investigates how islanders experience and navigate daily life. The findings highlight the islanders’ capacity for local mobilization, their sense of belonging, and the role of “islandness” in shaping social life. Importantly, the study underscores the need for governing institutions to acknowledge and respond to local realities, as these conditions are crucial for sustaining what residents perceive as a “living” and thriving place.
