- Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)

- Human behavior plays a central role in an environmentally sustainable world.

Organisations also have a significant environmental impact, with many

overlooked, despite the substantial opportunity organisations have to influence
it. This study encourages organisations to leverage their potential to drive
behavioral change among employees to promote more active sustainable
behavior in the workplace. To gain a deeper understanding of what influences
employees’ pro-environmental behavior, this study examines its relationship
between motivation and perceptions of a Green work climate. Employees’s
pro-environmental behavior is referred to in the study as Employee Green
Behavior (EGB). Data were collected quantitatively through a survey answered
by 119 participants. The results showed significant correlations between Green
work climate, motivation and EGB, providing support for the hypotheses that:
1) there is a positive relationship between green work climate and Employee
Green Behavior, and 2) there is a positive relationship between motivation and
Employee Green Behavior. Furthermore, regression analysis showed that
motivation had a mediating effect, which supported the study’s third
hypothesis: motivation interacts with Green work climate in relation to
Employee Green Behavior. These findings suggest that a Green work climate
enhances motivation, which in turn increases EGB. The results were discussed
mainly in light of Self-Determination Theory and social norms. This study
provides a unique comparison of motivation and Green work climate and
demonstrates that, when combined, they provide a stronger prediction of
pro-environmental behavior in the workplace. (Less)
