This study aims to investigate how people who are living in, who have lived or who are currently working at a non-profit organization in Södra Sofielund in Malmö, Sweden, experience the area through different aspects such as feelings of safety and belonging. This study also aims to discover what resources they wish to see implemented in Södra Sofielund as well as to investigate what resources are already implemented in the area according to the participants. The empirical material consists of five semi structured interviews with five informants. Information about the area and previous studies based on questionnaires are presented in this study as well as previous studies about vulnerable areas and the impact of police presence. Broken windows, ways of crime prevention, established and outsiders, panopticon, gentrification, stigmatization, labeling, organic solidarity as well as the importance of social ties are all concepts, ideas and theories that have been used in this study to understand the empirical material. Ethics and other aspects that relate to the collection of data are discussed before the presentation of the results and the analysis. More police presence, more greenery and stronger community ties are some of the aspects that are analyzed in this study through these different relevant criminological theories and concepts, with the aim of explaining what these aspects reveal about the current state of the area from the participants point of view. This study concludes with a summary of the analysis and a discussion about possible future research. With this study we hope to depict a nuanced picture of the wishes and stories from the people that actually spend their everyday life in Södra Sofielund. They are the experts of Södra Sofielund and through qualitative interviews we have been able to take part of their knowledge. (Less)
