- Abstract
- This study aimed to explore how news media in Sweden portray women and men involved in gang crime, along with highlighting their differences and similarities in descriptions. The study was based on qualitative content analysis of 75 articles published in Sydsvenskan and Helsingborgs Dagblad, whereas 36 articles described women involved in gang crime and 39 articles described men involved in gang crime. Framing theory and gender performativity theory were used to analyze the articles. The results establish that women in higher positions are portrayed in the media as victims and weak, while men are portrayed as violent and dangerous.
