Abstract
In today's day and age, the media has grown to become a central part of our lives. People can now communicate anonymously and without any boundaries. Though this opens many opportunities, it can additionally contribute to an online climate that results in various problematic outcomes, one being violence against women. Online forums are one arena where users can anonymously discuss subjects that are considered taboo or express thoughts that in real life would be offensive, insulting, or problematic. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze how users express themselves in Sweden's largest online forum, Flashback. More specifically, the aim was to see how users talk about and construct women in different threads about pornography, to investigate how discussions like these can reveal violence against women, and how misogynistic statements are received and responded to. The study employed a qualitative method, specifically a netnographic approach, as the data were collected online. The threads were delineated through search words, periods, and themes aligned with the aim of the study and resulted in a total of 25 threads. The theoretical foundation of the analysis was social constructionism, intersectionality, and power theory. The result of our study aligned with previous research on the subject, which found that users online are more prone to express problematic and extreme opinions when it comes to pornography, views on women, and violence. There was an apparent dehumanization where women were objectified and seen as a means to sexual pleasure and for users to exert power. Furthermore, the results showed the user’s violent fantasies and personal attacks on those who questioned their misogynist views. (Less)
