- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to understand how field workers in social services work on drug prevention efforts with young people and how they cooperated with other actors in this work. The theoretical approaches used to analyze the material were learning theory and systems theory. The study found that field workers use a variety of methods in their drug prevention efforts with adolescents. They emphasized the importance of being present in spaces where young people spend their time, such as schools and recreational activities. Field workers also highlighted their role in spreading information about drugs through cooperation with other organizations. Another key finding was the use of conversations with teenagers, such as concern conversations, as a method to address issues. In addition, outreach work was identified as a strategy to connect with young people in challenging situations or those at risk of substance abuse. The participants emphasized the importance of collaboration with other organizations, including schools, the police, social workers, Swedish customs, and families, as essential for effective drug prevention. However, they noted challenges in their collaborative efforts, such as time constraints, difficulties with filing reports of concern (orosanmälan), and a lack of clarity regarding the roles and responsibilities of social workers when it comes to adolescent protection. The participants also identified factors that contribute to successful collaboration, such as regular meetings with cooperating partners, engaged parents, and adherence to confidentiality rules.
