Sustainable occupations and health in a life course perspective
Abstract
Background: Individuals with mental health problems often experience difficulties with sensory processing, which can negatively affect their ability to engage in activities and reduce quality of life. Sensory modulation has been introduced as a promising approach in adult psychiatric care in Sweden, but occupational therapists' knowledge and application of this method in primary health care remains unexplored.
Aim: To examine occupational therapists' knowledge and application of sensory modulation in primary health care in Sweden, when working with patients experiencing mental health problems.
Method: The study employed a quantitative and qualitative cross-sectional design based on a web-based survey completed by 30 (N=30) occupational... (More)

Aim: To examine occupational therapists' knowledge and application of sensory modulation in primary health care in Sweden, when working with patients experiencing mental health problems.
Method: The study employed a quantitative and qualitative cross-sectional design based on a web-based survey completed by 30 (N=30) occupational therapists working in Swedish primary health care.
Results: The results showed that occupational therapists were generally aware of sensory difficulties among patients with mental health issues. Despite a lack of education in sensory modulation, several participants reported using different methods related to the approach. The majority expressed a desire for further knowledge on the subject.
Conclusion: The study suggests a need to strengthen occupational therapists’ knowledge of sensory modulation to ensure equitable and evidence-based care for individuals with mental health problems. Further research is needed to adapt the method to the primary health care context. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
