- October 7th 2023 a terror attack on an Israeli music festival took place. This would subsequently escalate the conflict between Israel and Palestine, with many calling it a genocide of the Palestinian people. This thesis investigates how pro-Palestinian demonstrations in Lund and Malmö following October 7th can be understood in relation to police strategies and Anne Nassauer’s theory about situational breakdowns. Our thesis uses a qualitative approach by analyzing data from interviews with police officers, as well as social media content posted by activists in order to understand the events of various protests in Skåne, with particular focus on the protests during the Eurovision Song Contest and the encampment protest in Lundagård. This would subsequently escalate the conflict between Israel and Palestine, with many calling it a genocide of the Palestinian people. This thesis investigates how pro-Palestinian demonstrations in Lund and Malmö following October 7th can be understood in relation to police strategies and Anne Nassauer’s theory about situational breakdowns. Our thesis uses a qualitative approach by analyzing data from interviews with police officers, as well as social media content posted by activists in order to understand the events of various protests in Skåne, with particular focus on the protests during the Eurovision Song Contest and the encampment protest in Lundagård. The findings of our research show the crucial role of factors such as how communication between police, protesters and organizers can affect the outcome of protests. Efficient communication in Malmö led to a relatively controlled environment, whereas breakdowns in communication in Lund resulted in more tension. Naussauer’s theory with terms such as spatial incursion and symbolic territory contributes to explaining the sequence of events during the demonstration in Lundagård which culminated in “Palestinagård” being taken down by officers and protesters being removed from the area, which may be seen as an example of spatial incursion in a symbolic territory. Furthermore the thesis highlights critique against Nassauer’s theory as it insufficiently accounts for the perceptions and opinions of the actors involved in the protests. The analysis reveals that there are more ways of explaining the sequence of events of a protest than the ones Nassauer highlights in her theory, which underlines the importance of a more nuanced understanding of different actors' perspectives and experiences.
