- Abstract
- Destructive fishing methods using bombs and cyanide in Kapoposang Island have destroyed coral reefs, threatening both ecosystem health and local livelihoods. To restore the ecosystem, the Indonesian government encourages local community participation, including through a coral adoption program. This thesis examines community engagement in coral restoration activities. It is based on 28 interviews, including conservation group members and non-members, a marine protected area officer, and a non-governmental organisation representative. For analysis, I apply the UNICEF Minimum Standards for Community Engagement (MSCE) in conjunction with participatory governance and social capital theories. The findings indicate that the local community is... (More)

The findings indicate that the local community is willing to participate in coral reef conservation efforts to protect their natural environment and livelihoods, with support from the government through various training sessions and equipment provision. However, improving inclusivity, enhancing community involvement in planning, and establishing feedback mechanisms are essential to strengthening the sustainability and resilience of community-based conservation programs.
