- Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

- Abstract
- People in helping professions experience a great deal of work-related stress, which for many result in burnout or other mental health issues. Developing self-compassion can, according to researchers, have a protective effect against burnout, among other things. Previous studies on brief compassion focused interventions have shown an improvement in self-compassion and reduced stress. The purpose of this study was therefore to examine the experience of a brief compassion focused intervention in a group setting, by current and prospective professionals in helping roles. The focus for the developed intervention was to practice self-compassion and compassion with others, as well as mindfulness. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with eight of the participants during the week after the intervention. Through reflexive thematic analysis, three themes were generated: Part of my journey, Closer to myself and For whose sake? The findings highlight the experience of the intervention as part of a larger, ongoing process towards a more compassionate approach and the participants' view of their own role in this process. The results also illustrate how the participants described an increased sense of agency, more self-compassion and self-acceptance, as well as an experience of approaching and grounding themselves in different ways. Furthermore, it also shows how the participants' development of compassion occurs in a relational context and needs to be understood from this perspective. The results suggest brief compassion focused interventions may be helpful in the development of a compassionate approach for current and prospective professionals in helping roles. (Less)
