A qualitative method was used, and data were collected through interviews with social workers. The study highlighted the emotional and psychological challenges social workers face in their daily work with vulnerable clients. The results showed that the participants viewed empathy as an important part of social work. They also described how continuously feeling deep empathy over a long and intense period could lead to compassion fatigue. This fatigue negatively affected their emotional engagement, making it harder for them to respond empathetically to clients. Furthermore, the social workers emphasized that compassion fatigue impaired the quality of their emotional work. They also explained that managing compassion fatigue was most effectively done through supervision and support from colleagues. (Less)
