- Abstract
- There is a lack of research on how young adults experienced having a parent with a dementia-related illness, particularly regarding the support they received. This knowledge gap risked leaving young relatives without adequate help, as existing support systems were often designed for older relatives. The aim of this study was to explore how young relatives experienced the support they received when one of their parents had a dementia-related illness, and what kind of support they wished for. A total of ten semi-structured interviews were conducted with young adults between the ages of twenty-one and thirty-four. The material was structured thematically to identify common... (More)

A total of ten semi-structured interviews were conducted with young adults between the ages of twenty-one and thirty-four. The material was structured thematically to identify common patterns and experiences. Their experiences were analyzed with the theory's structural vulnerability and transition theory. The results showed that support from services such as healthcare, schools, and social services was often insufficient or entirely lacking. Instead, informal support, such as talking to others in similar situations proved to be very important. The study shows the need for more tailored support for young carers and that professionals need to improve their understanding of and response to this group’s needs. (Less)
