Abstract (Swedish)
This thesis analyzes the legitimacy of the United States’ sanctions against Cuba during the Cold War from a human rights perspective. It applies four theoretical frameworks: John Locke’s natural rights theory, Marxism, liberal internationalism, and the UN Charter. Using an idea analysis method, the study examines how these frameworks interpret the purpose, means, and effects of the sanctions. Empirical evidence shows that while the sanctions were justified by appeals to democracy and human rights, their actual impact often undermined those very rights by worsening the humanitarian situation for the Cuban population. The analysis suggests that the sanctions lacked legal legitimacy under international law, disproportionately affected... (More)
This thesis analyzes the legitimacy of the United States’ sanctions against Cuba during the Cold War from a human rights perspective. The analysis suggests that the sanctions lacked legal legitimacy under international law, disproportionately affected civilians, and failed to achieve their political objectives. The findings highlight a normative contradiction between the intended goals and the real outcomes of coercive foreign policy. (Less)
