- Abstract
- This thesis evaluates the impact of Peru’s flagship Conditional Cash Transfer program, JUNTOS, on multidimensional poverty by applying the Multidimensional Poverty Index. Using a Difference-in-Differences approach adapted for staggered treatment adoption through the Callaway and Sant’Anna (2021) estimator, the analysis draws on nationally representative household survey data from 2004 to 2007. By leveraging the program’s phased rollout across provinces, the study provides estimates of JUNTOS’ effect on education, health, and living standards. The results reveal modest but positive treatment effects on reducing multidimensional poverty, particularly emerging two years after program implementation, although estimates lack statistical... By leveraging the program’s phased rollout across provinces, the study provides estimates of JUNTOS’ effect on education, health, and living standards. The results reveal modest but positive treatment effects on reducing multidimensional poverty, particularly emerging two years after program implementation, although estimates lack statistical significance. These findings suggest that while programs like JUNTOS hold potential for poverty reduction beyond income dimensions, their impacts remain limited without complementary investments in service quality and accessibility. The study highlights the need for integrated policy designs to amplify the long-term benefits of social protection programs aimed at breaking cycles of poverty. (Less)
