Abstract (Swedish)
This research explores the socio-economic impacts of flooding on women's livelihoods in Banjul, The Gambia, a city that is increasingly vulnerable to climate change and flooding disasters. With increasing flooding in coastal regions, Banjul is among the cities with significant challenges, particularly for women, who are usually marginalized and disproportionately affected in case of disasters. The study aims to examine how flooding impacts women’s socioeconomic activities, everyday mobility, and overall well-being in Banjul. Utilizing the Sustainable Livelihood Framework, this thesis grounds the interdependency of women's livelihood and broader social, economic, and environmental factors shaping their vulnerability. Such an approach... (More)

Such an approach highlights the intertwining of gender, poverty, and disaster resilience in emphasizing the appropriateness of a close analysis of flooding's gendered expression. Through this research, it aims to highlight how frequent flooding events impact women's socio-economic activities, mobility, and general health based on qualitative procedures, including semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions, the study records women's experiences within various constituencies within Banjul's flood-hit areas. According to the findings flooding badly affects women's livelihoods, particularly those involved in informal occupations such as street vending. Women engaged in these occupations experience real hardships, for instance, fewer relief and socio-economic interventions, which tend to neglect their special needs. In addition, flooding leads to social exclusion because women experience mobility issues that limit access to markets and basic services, thereby impacting their economic autonomy and exacerbating existing gender disparities (Less)
