- Abstract
- This thesis addresses state regulation of assisted reproductive technology in Sweden. Theoretically the study enters into a critical dialogue with a reproductive justice framework, theories on reproductive racism, along with Jasbir K. Puar’s theorizing on disability, capacity and debility in neoliberal nationstates. Methodologically, the study is inspired by the Foucaulian understanding of the relationship between truth and knowledge framed through the tradition of critical discourse analysis. Situating itself in the field of queer kinship studies, this thesis aims to keep building knowledge on how hegemonic discourses around family production create and recreate ideas about the Swedish nation.
Through analysis of two relevant documents, the underlying logics and arguments on which the basis of the regulation relies upon are addressed, asking what hegemonic discourses around ‘family’ and the state are constitutive of the documents. Three analytical themes are presented: ‘the risky individual and the responsible state’, ‘liberal eugenics and the best interest of the state’ and ‘stable subjects and predictable futures’. The thesis proposes: state regulation of reproduction that relies on predictability and risk assessments through logics of neoliberal profitability, avoidance of state accountability concerning social justice, and furthermore has similarities with historical examples of Swedish policies on sterilization, should be abolished.
