Abstract
The aim of the study is to garner an understanding of Swedish social media users' attitudes towards the spreading of videos depicting deadly violence. To achieve this a mixed methodology was employed with a web survey that was published on social media to gather information on users' attitudes towards the phenomenon. Through the survey, participants for focus groups were found which was the studies main method of gathering empirical data which was later supported by data gathered through the survey. A thematic analysis was conducted on the data and put in relation to the idea of victimization and Manuel Castells’ theory “Network Society”.

The study found that users' attitudes towards the spreading of videos depicting deadly violence were negative, with their views influenced by how the content spreads. Users found it hard to witness such content but also believed that the autonomy of social media and the increased spreading causes violent content to be normalized. As social media allows users to produce and share their own content their relationship towards videos depicting deadly violence is heavily dependent on algorithms and the social media context in which they appear. Further the study found that the degree in which the individuals were seen as victims was affected by different factors, such as how much the individual identified with the victim and the victims' portrayal as inferior in the video.
