Adapting Pilot Training for Generation Z
(2025) FLYL01 20251School of Aviation
- Abstract
- This study explores how Generation Z pilots are shaping the future of pilot training in commercial aviation within Scandinavia, with a particular focus on SAS. The aim is to compare how the “Learning Triangle” model (Illeris, 2007) can be adapted to better align with the learning preferences of younger pilots. A systematic literature review was conducted and selected studies were analysed alongside internal demographic data from SAS. The dataset consisted of anonymized birth dates of all pilots across SAS’s three platforms (Scandinavia, Connect, and Link). This data was used to create original visual representations of generational distribution across the three platforms. The study also compares Gen Z learning preferences with those of... (More)

The study also compares Gen Z learning preferences with those of earlier generations, specially Generation Y, where several overlapping traits were identified, such as a desire for meaningful learning, digital tools and instant feedback. The results also suggest that Scandinavian airlines, particularly SAS, should continue to develop training without losing sight of the needs of a multi-generational pilot workforce. The study concludes that although the Illeris model offers a solid theoretical framework, it should be supported by generation specific insights to remain relevant. (Less)
