Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

Abstract
More than half of Swedish children between the ages of nine and eighteen state that they play computer games daily. Given the increased prevalence of problematic computer gaming and digital overuse among young people, family-based treatment methods are increasingly emphasized. The purpose of this qualitative pre-study is to investigate parents' experiences of conflicts in the home regarding children's screen use and their expectations of what a family-centered intervention should contain. Considering this, the following research question is formulated: How do parents describe their lived experience of conflicts linked to children's problematic screen use, and their wishes for support in a family-oriented treatment?

More than half of Swedish children between the ages of nine and eighteen state that they play computer games daily. Given the increased prevalence of problematic computer gaming and digital overuse among young people, family-based treatment methods are increasingly emphasized. The purpose of this qualitative pre-study is to investigate parents' experiences of conflicts in the home regarding children's screen use and their expectations of what a family-centered intervention should contain. Considering this, the following research question is formulated: How do parents describe their lived experience of conflicts linked to children's problematic screen use, and their wishes for support in a family-oriented treatment?
Through an interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) of semi-structured interviews with eight parents, some recurring themes could be identified: the challenge of maintaining boundaries, emotional stress linked to perceived responsibility and lack of coherent parenting strategies. The parents expressed a need for structured guidance, professional support and tools that take into account both relational dynamics and the needs of the individual child. The results show that the parents whose children have a neuropsychiatric disability in combination with a problematic computer gaming and/or screen use, saw a great need for support in the form of regular physical meetings with professional staff to get help to distinguish between the "therapist role" and the parental role, which seems to be a significant underlying factor in conflicts in the home. The results are discussed in relation to Self-Determination Theory and systemic family therapy perspectives. The conclusions stress the importance of integrating cross-family approaches into future interventions. (Less)
