- Abstract
- This paper examines how the role of Systembolaget, Sweden’s state wine monopoly has
evolved in relation to market dynamics, public health objectives, and consumer preferences.
Using a combination of survey data and an analysis of retail statistics, the study examines how
different sales channels – Systembolaget, online retailers, and farm sales – are perceived by
consumers. This is done through the modelling of a Hotelling street, where the sales channels’
and consumers’ positions are analysed. The results indicate that while the current monopoly
aligns well with consumer preferences, a substantial minority express support for alternative
