- Abstract
- The European Union’s recent history of sanctions targeting the Russian Federation can be dated back to 2014 when the latter committed to its illegal annexation of the Crimean peninsula from the state of Ukraine. In the wake of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 have we seen how the European Union has expanded upon these preexisting sanctions through several extensive sanctions packages. We have however, during this period also seen highlighted the importance energy resources has played as a factor and the weight EU’s dependence on Russia as an energy exporter has played for their quickly deteriorating relationship. The aim of this paper is to shed light on the relationship between the EU's dependency on Russian energy imports... (More)

The aim of this paper is to shed light on the relationship between the EU's dependency on Russian energy imports and the development and implementation of EU sanctions. Through the analysis of EU sanctions packages as well as the measures taken by the Union to decrease its dependency will this paper not only show how the EU as a whole has decreased and possibly shifted their dependency on Russian sources but also how these varying levels of dependency has played a part in shaping EU sanctions policy.
