- Abstract
- This study examines how individuals with experience in gang-related criminality perceive and describe their transformation after leaving this lifestyle. The study investigates how their past experiences shape their prospects for social integration and identifies factors that facilitate or hinder this transition. Five semi-structured interviews were conducted with former gang members. The findings suggest that participants disengage after realizing that this lifestyle is not worth living, despite major challenges. Their criminal past has given them social skills and resilience that can be used as assets in civil life.
