- Abstract
- The aim of this study was to explore how psychologists perceive time limited therapy. Time limited therapy is defined as restricting the number of sessions before the beginning of therapeutic treatment. The overall purpose of the study is to shed light on different perspectives in terms of how time limited therapy affects the therapist in their work and the treatment. Five psychologists with different methodological orientations were interviewed through semi structured and open questions about their personal experiences and thoughts. The interviews were analysed through reflexive thematic analysis and six themes were identified: Interpretation of the definition time limitation, Evidence based work, What is my role as a therapist? The overall purpose of the study is to shed light on different perspectives in terms of how time limited therapy affects the therapist in their work and the treatment. Five psychologists with different methodological orientations were interviewed through semi structured and open questions about their personal experiences and thoughts. The interviews were analysed through reflexive thematic analysis and six themes were identified: Interpretation of the definition time limitation, Evidence based work, What is my role as a therapist? Time limitation and psychoeducation, Trust and time and Time for choice. The participants shared some experiences; time constraints implied that they as therapists became more active and psycho-educative in their role, and that time limited therapy could be a difficult obstacle when trying to form lasting alliances with patients. Differences in experiences were also presented, especially when it came to the interpretation of evidence-based work and time limited therapy and what the task of the therapist can be seen as. Different ideas on how to manage time limitation within therapy and how it can affect patients were presented and some therapists viewed time limited therapy as helpful, whereas some participants perceived it to be a negative aspect in their work and that it was not a neutral incitement. Future research is needed to see whether the findings in this paper are representative of other therapists and to see how time in itself affects therapists and patients, regardless of methodological orientation.
Keywords: time limited psychotherapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, psychodynamic therapy, psychoeducation, patient agency, alliance building. (Less) - Abstract (Swedish)
(More)
