- Abstract
- This study explores how school counsellors and treatment practitioners perceive and address violence in young people's intimate relationships. Using a qualitative approach, six semistructured interviews were conducted, three with school counsellors working at upper secondary schools and three with practitioners from various treatment settings. The analysis was guided by the normalisation process theory and ecological systems theory. The findings reveal that violence manifests in multiple forms, physical, psychological, and digital, often occurring simultaneously. Digital control emerged as a prevalent issue, with behaviours such as excessive messaging, demands for location proof, and restrictions on clothing or social contacts. Gender norms influenced both the expression of violence and responses to it: girls' accounts were more often validated, while boys’ experiences tended to be trivialised. Organisational factors, including collaboration between schools, social services, and other agencies, played a crucial role in providing timely and effective support, though challenges such as confidentiality barriers and differing priorities were reported. The study concludes that effective prevention and intervention require both individual-level support and coordinated, structural efforts between professional actors. It highlights the importance of addressing gender norms, enhancing digital violence awareness, and fostering trust-based relationships with young people. (Less)
