- This thesis examines how societal circumstances and historical references can be included in the construction of narratives with the intention of reaching and influencing listeners in a particular direction. It is based on two historical periods in Italy's history, first, the fascist takeover of the Kingdom of Italy, and then the establishment of the Republic of Italy following the fall of the totalitarian fascist dictatorship. - This thesis examines how societal circumstances and historical references can be included in the construction of narratives with the intention of reaching and influencing listeners in a particular direction. It is based on two historical periods in Italy's history, first, the fascist takeover of the Kingdom of Italy, and then the establishment of the Republic of Italy following the fall of the totalitarian fascist dictatorship. To explore these two state and governance changes, the study conducts a comparative narrative analysis of two ideological speeches by two different Italian politicians. The first speech is by the fascist, at the time not yet Prime Minister, Benito Mussolini and the second by the newly elected first president of the republic, Enrico De Nicola. Through the theoretical assumptions surrounding historical consciousness and the use of history, the study concluded that the traumatic and unstable circumstances before and during the delivery of the speeches contributed to a receptive audience and thus created an optimal climate for shaping people’s interpretation of history for personal or ideological gain. The speakers drew upon this social situation and the fact that history plays a significant role in people's worldview and identity. The study shows that they extensively used historical references as a means to reach the audience on existential, moral, ideological, and political levels. Finally, the study also found that the specific circumstances of the different speeches influenced their purpose and aim in different directions, and consequently, also their narrative approaches.
