(2025) PSPR14 20251Department of Psychology
- Abstract
- The aim of this study was to explore therapists’ experiences on facilitating compassion-focused therapy (CFT) in a group format within a Swedish context. The present study sought to examine the opportunities and challenges the therapists experienced in their work, as well as how they described their role as group leaders. Six therapists who had conducted at least one 12-week CFT group treatment were interviewed. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed using reflexive thematic analysis according to Braun & Clarke. Four main themes were identified: (1) Challenges in group dynamics and how they are handled, (2) Opportunities in group dynamics compared to individual therapy, (3) Therapists role and responsibility... The therapists experienced that the group dynamics could be both supportive and challenging. They described the group setting as offering opportunities such as normalization, emotional recognition and practical training in compassion. At the same time, the therapists described the importance of managing difficulties such as dominance, silence and conflict with a compassionate approach was emphasized. Therapists also highlighted the benefit of co-facilitation and of practicing compassion themselves. This study highlights CFT therapists’ experiences of the opportunities and challenges of
leading CFT in group format within a Swedish context.

(Less)
