- Abstract
- This thesis examines the Climate Mass held in Stockholm Cathedral in September 2023. The aim is to understand the theology of the Climate Mass and how it terms and theologically processes and interpret the climate crisis in a Swedish church sermon. The thesis also investigates how the context matter for theology in eco-theological preaching in the Church of Sweden. Using an eco-theological framework with contextual theological perspectives, the study employs Clara Nystrand’s concept of crux to examine how the Climate Mass integrated its socio-cultural and societal context with biblical interpretation and tradition amid the current ecological and spiritual crisis. The analysis reveals that the preachers did not separate transcendental and worldly notions of conversion, grace, and the kingdom of God, while also incorporating the non-human world into sacramental theology. The thesis argues that the highly specific context of the Climate Mass enabled the preaching of a radical ecotheology, though replicating this approach in other settings may prove challenging due to the political agency and socio-economic realities of middle-class Swedes. Nonetheless, the study suggests that constructing an existential crux - addressing both the climate crisis and the congregation’s existential concerns - could offer an adaptable model for eco-theological preaching in diverse contexts, balancing ecological urgency with homiletical and spiritual needs.
