Abstract
A general purpose of this study has been to refine the image of Jon Fosse as a playwright. The way to approach this has been to examine his plays from a perspective from critical theory – namely the utopian, as formulated by Theodor W. Adorno and Ruth Levitas. More specifically, the task has been to explore the negation and its utopian potential in the following five plays by Jon Fosse: Nokon kjem til å komme (1992), Og aldri skal vi skiljast (1993), Namnet (1994), Draum om hausten (1998) and Eg er vinden (2006). In a thematic analysis I have shown how aspects in Fosse’s plays such as anonymity, non-existing places and linguistic ground zeros can be described as giving a utopian quality to Jon Fosse’s dramatic texts.
