Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate adolescents’ experiences of weight-
related bullying in a Swedish school context, how they experience the schools’
strategies for weight-related bullying and which actions they wished the schools
had taken. Since previous research on the subject is limited, an explorative
qualitative study was conducted in which a critical realist position was adopted.
The data was generated through 13 semi-structured interviews with adolescents
aged 12 to 19. The data was then analysed using a reflexive thematic analysis.
The data analysis generated three themes. The first theme, My body is the

The data analysis generated three themes. The first theme, My body is the
problem, illustrated with its subthemes partly what the bullying looked like,
partly the adolescents’ successive internalization process of weight-related
bullying. The second theme, The school fails me, portrayed through its
subthemes how schools trivialized or legitimized the bullying, along with how
the adolescents felt that the bullying ceased to exist if they either disappeared or
lost weight. The third theme, I will be ruined for life, visualized the adolescents’
degradation and deterministic feeling that present and future were ruined. The
results of the study are partially aligned with previous research. The study has
practical implications where an inclusion of weight-related bullying in official
reports and school anti-bullying policies, could foster a deeper understanding of
weight-related bullying in a Swedish school context as well as how it can be
better addressed. Future research is recommended to further map weight-related
bullying and focus on the individuals’ experiences rather than strategies that
promote weight loss. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
