Abstract (Swedish)
This study examines how institutional structures established in colonial times continue to shape the political systems in Senegal after 2000 through a qualitative case study approach. The analysis focuses on the organization of the state, the relationship between state and society, and political power structures and elites. These findings show that despite formal democratic reforms, Senegal's political system remains characterized by strong institutional continuity. Centralized state authority, the reliance on informal intermediaries, and other colonial governance practices continue to shape the political system. This study displays how the changes... (More)
This study examines how institutional structures established in colonial times continue to shape the political systems in Senegal after 2000 through a qualitative case study approach. The analysis focuses on the organization of the state, the relationship between state and society, and political power structures and elites. The theoretical framework is made up of historical institutionalism and postcolonial theory. These findings show that despite formal democratic reforms, Senegal's political system remains characterized by strong institutional continuity. Centralized state authority, the reliance on informal intermediaries, and other colonial governance practices continue to shape the political system. This study displays how the changes made in Senegal have largely occurred within already existing institutional frameworks rather than structural transformations. These findings aim to contribute to a broader theoretical understanding of institutional continuity in postcolonial states. (Less)
