Sustainable occupations and health in a life course perspective
Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
Background: Folk high schools are a uniquely Nordic phenomenon with individualized pedagogy. Studying affects occupational balance, which is the experience of balance between tasks and meaningful activities. Folk high school students as a group are not widely researched, particularly in combination with occupational therapy. To describe the complexity of occupational balance, models linked to occupational science are used.
Aim: The aim is to investigate the subjective experience of occupational balance in relation to studies, among students in the general program at a folk high school in Skåne.

Aim: The aim is to investigate the subjective experience of occupational balance in relation to studies, among students in the general program at a folk high school in Skåne.
Method: The method used was a semi-structured interview study. Seven interviews took place, on-site at the schools and digitally, all with both authors present. Qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach was used in the analysis.
Result: Three main categories were identified: importance of the environment, individual characteristics that affect occupational performance, and importance of meaningful activities, as well as sub-categories related to these. Results show that informants were affected by their living conditions and that previous schooling had a lack of support that is now provided in the folk high school context, which has positively affected the informants occupational balance.
Conclusion: The folk high school's unique pedagogy allows for positive change. The importance of a supportive environment enables change and implies that occupational therapy interventions could support the group to experience occupational balance in everyday life. This study shows that further research on the subject is needed. (Less)
