- Abstract
- In a society where performance demands are rapidly increasing, the need for greater knowledge of the factors that contribute to individuals perceived performance has become increasingly important. The aim of the present study was to examine whether the factors of leadership and group cohesion influenced and interacted in relation to individual perceived performance, whether these relationships differed between organizations in working life and the context of team sports. The study was conducted using a quantitative web-based survey, targeting employed individuals and team sport athletes. In total, the sample consisted of 227 participants, of whom 118 were active team sport athletes and 109 were employed individuals spread across various... (More)

In total, the sample consisted of 227 participants, of whom 118 were active team sport athletes and 109 were employed individuals spread across various industries. The data were analyzed using correlation and regression analyses, where group cohesion, relationship-oriented leadership, and task-oriented leadership all showed positive connections with perceived performance in both contexts. However, group cohesion was the only variable shown to be a significant predictor when all variables were analyzed simultaneously, also in both contexts. In summary, the study showed that individuals' perceived performance was primarily shaped by social and group-related factors rather than individual, formal, and direct leadership behaviors. The study can be seen as a contribution to understanding how organizations and employers, as well as sports leaders, can utilize group cohesion in relation to leadership and examine how they interact across different performance environments in order to create optimal conditions for perceived performance within both work and team sports contexts. (More)
