- Abstract
- This study examined whether emotional expressions affect the public's
credibility assessments in interviews with children who have been subjected to
sexual abuse. The study also examined whether and how the child's gender
affects these assessments. The study's framework consisted of The Emotional
Victim Effect and the framing effect. The study was conducted using an
experimental between-subjects design in which 101 participants were
randomly assigned to one of four vignettes describing a fictional case of sexual
abuse against an 8-year-old child. In the vignettes, the child's emotional
expression (emotional/neutral) and the child's gender (boy/girl) varied.

Credibility was measured using the Child Sexual Assault Victim Credibility
Scale (CSAVCS), where participants responded to a total of 23 statements via a
questionnaire. Results showed a significant main effect of emotional
expression (p < .001, η² = 0.146), where emotional children were perceived as
more credible than children who behaved neutrally. Results showed neither a
significant main effect of gender (p = 0.713) nor a significant interaction effect
(p = 0.404). Possible explanations for the study's results as well as limitations
were discussed in the discussion section. The study confirms that The
Emotional Victim Effect is applicable in a Swedish context and that framing
effects affect the public's credibility assessments in cases involving child
