Abstract
The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between religious coping and state anxiety in the context of stressful life events. Previous international research has investigated the use of religious coping in response to stressful life events and has shown that religious coping may influence perceived anxiety. However, this area remains relatively unexplored in a Swedish context. The present study therefore sought to contribute to increased knowledge regarding religious coping in Sweden. Data were collected through a digital survey administered to religious adults in Sweden (N = 101). Participants responded to questions regarding their use of religious coping, measured with the Brief RCOPE, and their level of state anxiety,... (More)

Data were collected through a digital survey administered to religious adults in Sweden (N = 101). Participants responded to questions regarding their use of religious coping, measured with the Brief RCOPE, and their level of state anxiety, measured with the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory – State version (STAI-S). Linear regression analysis was conducted to examine the relationships between coping strategies and anxiety levels. The results showed that negative religious coping (NRC) was significantly associated with higher levels of state anxiety. In contrast, no significant association was found between positive religious coping (PRC) and lower levels of state anxiety. The findings contribute to an increased understanding of how negative coping strategies may intensify anxiety experiences in stressful situations. Given the secular character of Swedish society, there is a need for further research examining how religious coping, in this case prayer, is used and experienced in relation to stressful life events within a Swedish context. Abstract (Swedish)
