The aim of the study is to examine how primary school teachers relate to the demands and expectations that characterize the modern school environment in relation to their professional role. The study focuses on how teachers describe emotional labor within the teaching profession, relational work, teachers’ everyday practice, and external demands. The study is based on seven semi-structured interviews with primary school teachers. The results show that teachers experience increased complexity in their professional role, in which emotional labor and relational work are positioned as requirements. The findings further indicate that the teaching role is perceived as more personal today than in the past, contributing to a higher emotional burden. To manage this development, teachers describe how they develop various strategies to meet the demands and expectations that characterize their everyday work. The results may contribute to further research on the sustainability of the teaching profession and to the development of teacher education regarding how teachers can manage emotional and relational work in addition to subject knowledge and pedagogical skills.
