Abstract
In this project, we are studying the material flow and the information flow of sample materials and the appurtenant report of deviation for the purpose to be able to suggest better solutions. The sample material, which is to be analysed, is to be continuously taken from the production flow. The purpose is to navigate the process by the results found by the analysis. Because of this, it's very important that both methods of analysis are ensured and that the sample material is representative for the production flow. However, even more importantly, is that activities and transportations, combined with both flows, must perform in a quick and correct way in order to maintain or improve Höganäs AB's competitive strength.

According to reports are about 20 products per day not available, for loading, at the time of delivery. If the result analysis, of the product, is missing the lab is to be contacted by the department of dispatch in order to get information about when the result can be expected. Soon after this, information returns to the department of dispatch who forwards the information to the respective drivers. The driver then decides whether to wait or turn around, Part of the high cost of transportation at Höganäs AB relates to what extent of delay products are subject to in comparison to the decided time of delivery. Extensively delayed products tend to be transported by air instead of by sea to avoid any harm to customers. One way to partly minimize delays is to make the processes of logistics of the sample material flow more efficiently.

The transportation of sample materials from the ?works of iron powder? is performed by the laboratory personal. The argument for this according to Höganäs AB is that the laboratory assistants know how important it is to handle sample materials in the right way. In order to improve the material flow into the laboratory from the ?works of iron powder?, we have proposed that part of the transportation can be performed by the control room personal and packaging personal. This will reduce the lead-time of transportation.

In order to make the laboratory able to communicate the results as quickly as possible, the sample material is to be transported without interruption, and waiting times and activities either be reduced or eliminated. If the sample material flow should be more effective and at the same time more safe, the current pneumatic tube system should be enlarged.

Today, the laboratory assistants perform their work tasks in subject to relation to their competence. This means that the flexibility is low when it comes to the disposal of the workforce. If the personal are to be educated and become multi-skilled, flexibility will increase, and therefore tasks would not be gathered as it was before.

All results are entered into the computer system by the laboratory assistants. To speed up the processes, the results of analysis can automatically be transmitted into the computer system. By doing so, the lead-times becomes shorter. In addition, manpower is made available to other tasks. The cost of transmitting results of analysis directly into the computer system instead of doing it by hand has not been assessed. However, we find this issue worth examinating. If it indicates that the cost is in relation to what the implementation is worth, the suggestion should be accepted and implemented.

In accordance to our suggestion about the importance of the ability to make priorities for selected products, we strongly recommend that appurtenant sample materials have priority rights in the lab. In order to implement this, the sample material should be equipped with special marks and the data system should also indicate a priority by confirmation. (Less)
