- Abstract
- Since 2001 the Danish government has made increasing restrictions of the Aliens act. According to the Government, the purpose of these restrictions is to encourage greater integration of the ethnic minorities in the Danish society. The foreign policy of the Danish government has on the other hand received much criticism from the UN, EU and NGO's for not respecting the human rights of the ethnic minorities in Denmark because of these provisions and therefore very negative consequences for the integration process. - Since 2001 the Danish government has made increasing restrictions of the Aliens act. According to the Government, the purpose of these restrictions is to encourage greater integration of the ethnic minorities in the Danish society. The foreign policy of the Danish government has on the other hand received much criticism from the UN, EU and NGO's for not respecting the human rights of the ethnic minorities in Denmark because of these provisions and therefore very negative consequences for the integration process. How does the Danish government's refugee- and asylum policy promote and/or limit the integration in Denmark? The purpose of this paper is to answer this question by taking a theoretical approach of the concept of integration and an analysis of the government's restrictions of the Aliens act since 2001. These restrictions will be compared with the international commitments of human rights for thereby making and important realm of understanding to discuss the aim and methods of the government's integration policy and the changes since 2001 until today, what kind of society the governments actions shows in relation to their refugee and asylum policy and finally what positive and negative consequences the governments policy has on the integration of ethnic minorities in Denmark. The conclusions of this paper indicates that the government's integration policy has a double-sided agenda which is limiting the living conditions and rights of the ethnic minorities and at the same time presenting work and engagement in the society as the most crucial elements of the integration of ethnic minorities in the Danish society. But the overriding conclusion is that the Danish government limits the integration in Denmark because the governments restricted rules undermines the rights of ethics minorities to private life and family life and induces social marginalisation, discrimination and racism why the government's purpose, that the strict refugee- and asylum policy promote integration, do not reflect the reality where the integrations strategy of the government seems to have failed in the year 2008.
