- Abstract
- The aim of this master thesis is to examine the identity of librarians. We have done this by conducting a text analysis where we have analysed texts produced by DIK, the major union of librarians, and by Library and Information Science departments in Sweden. The material we have analysed is texts produced in the aim of introducing and marketing the librarian occupation and education. The aim of this study is to find out how the identity of the librarian is expressed in this material. We have conducted the text analysis by adopting the critical discourse analyst Norman Fairclough´s theories. - The aim of this master thesis is to examine the identity of librarians. The material we have analysed is texts produced in the aim of introducing and marketing the librarian occupation and education. The aim of this study is to find out how the identity of the librarian is expressed in this material. We have also analysed and discussed the result according to status by applying Andrew Abbott´s theory about professions. The main finding of our study is that the material reflects a wide range of different librarian skills and that it doesn't reflect one uniform identity. One of our conclusions is that the material expresses two different librarian identities. The first is more traditional and associated with the library institution and the role of the librarian as a mediator of literature and culture. The other identity is associated with Information Technology such as computer skills and Internet. This future associated identity, expressed in our material, also seems to be more associated with higher status than the other identity. Because of the diversity in the two identities and that the two of them doesn?t mix, the two identities appears to be in a state of conflict with each other. This brings us to the conclusion that our material doesn?t reflect a very flexible librarian identity, rather two different, but equally unaltered identities. (Less)
