- Eye-tracking methodologies have been used extensively in spoken language research. However, no qualitative account of the relationship between language processing and gaze behavior has been given so far. Such an account is derived from different theories, essentially stating that the observed correspondence between visual and linguistic processing is based on
activation spreading between the different sorts of representations included in a concept. An experiment showing that gaze also follows understanding when gaze reactions are not taskrelevant supports this linking hypothesis.
