- Abstract
- In this thesis, I am examining speeches held by George W. Bush on the subject of ?family values? (also called ?moral values?). These politics are symbolized by the debates on abortion, abstinence-only education and gay marriage. Also, the rhetoric of social movements such as ?Operation Rescue? an anti-abortion organisation, ?Abstinence Clearinghouse? an organisation promoting abstinence-only education and ?Alliance for marriages? an organisation working towards a conservative definition on marriage, a definition excluding gay marriage, is analysed. According to many, the American ethos is already composed of elements forming the so-called American dream; a belief structured around the liberty of the individual and the equality of each and every individual in the pursuit of happiness and success. Family values on the other hand cripple both liberty and equality of Americans depending on gender, sexuality and ethnicity. (Less)
