Abstract
During the period 1905 to 1940 it was possible to get a loan from the state to buy land and build a small farm or a house in rural areas. This loan act and its effects have been studied earlier in different ways, but never as a total study for a geographic region. The region Malmöhus Län has been chosen. The purpose of this paper is to study in which parts of the area loans were taken and who sold the land that was used for these purposes. Earlier studies have looked at a larger geographical area for some specific years. This study gave result that does not correspond with earlier studies.

* Private organisations handled 26% of the money, a lot higher share than expected.
* 50% of the loans were for small dwellings, many in towns. Which was contrary to the intensions in the loan act.
* Loans were only taken in areas with weak farming possibilities. * One third of the loans where for land with buildings on, which was contrary to the intention in the loan act, but similar to other areas in the country.
* Four types of landowners sold land for this loan project:
· The estates one fifth, which was less than expected.
· Two speculators sold one fifth of the land used, surprising that they could do that much.
· Big farms sold one fifth of the land used.
· Small landowners who sold land for one or two small farms each made up for two fifths of land sold. The sale of land for this loanproject was the main purpose of this study. The result shows that the loanpossibillity had very little effect on the econmy of the estates. There was a much larger effect for the big farms that sold many lots per farm and for the small family farms that sold one or two lots. (Less)
