Abstract
People are constantly using there friends in order to ask for a favor or to get hold of some information. This is usually done unconsciously and it is just viewed as everyday life behavior. The function and the use of these links definitely have a value, which means that it can be viewed as a form of capital. But this capital is not caught in the traditional theories of physical capital or human capital; it demands it’s on theorization. The collective name for these theories is social capital theory. People are constantly using there friends in order to ask for a favor or to get hold of some information. This is usually done unconsciously and it is just viewed as everyday life behavior. The function and the use of these links definitely have a value, which means that it can be viewed as a form of capital. But this capital is not caught in the traditional theories of physical capital or human capital; it demands it’s on theorization. The collective name for these theories is social capital theory. Social capital is connected to human capital theory but there is one significant difference and that is that social capital focus on the value that arise in the relation between people, while human capital focus on the individual. The importance of social capital should not be underestimated especially not in relation to the labor market, which is the focus for the essay. The main purpose for this essay is to look at how social capital works and how it can be used for an unemployed person in his or hers search for a job. I do this by first look at social capital theory in general; this is done both from an individual and a collective perspective. I then combine the insights from these chapters with the specific problems that arise when a person is in a job searching process. This creates the right tools for the final analyze that are based on the results from my empirical qualitative investigation of an organization for unemployed people above the age of 50. This organization, called Sera, tries to get people in to the labor market by establishing personal contacts with different companies. The result from this analyze is that social capital plays an important part in the job searching process both in form of strong ties and weak ties. The strong ties are important in order to motivate the members to keep up the search, and to raise the member’s confidence and life quality. The weak ties have its advantages in the transmission of information between Sera and companies but also between Sera and other similar organizations. The overall impression is that social capital has a potential to be a good tool for marginalized groups to overcome the existing discrimination on the labor market and that it is possible to build up relevant social capital on a collective level even though its individuals lacks it.
