- The main purpose of this study is to describe and increase the understanding, of female nurse's experiences of stresses in their specific context, as well as their use of coping strategies in handling possible stresses. My hope is to give focus to the gender dimension within the stress literature and to lay a foundation for further research. - The main purpose of this study is to describe and increase the understanding, of female nurse's experiences of stresses in their specific context, as well as their use of coping strategies in handling possible stresses. My hope is to give focus to the gender dimension within the stress literature and to lay a foundation for further research. To achieve these purposes I use a phenomenological perspective, which aims to identify and uncover the process of meaning constitution concerning stress and coping within each subjective individual. Twelve female nurses, employed in the same hospital, were asked too freely and in their own words describe their experience, thoughts and feelings about stresses and coping within their work context. The received protocols are analysed according to the method Meaning Constitution Analysis, 4.3, MCA, developed by Sages & Johansson, University of Lund, Software: Minerva. In the results I have been able to conclude general themes, as well as specific domains, in the process of meaning constitution within the individuals and the individuals as a group. The study is based on a psychological approach, in a cognitivetransactional view. The results are connected to two dominating research models within these domains; Karasek & Theorells demand-control-social support model and Lazarus & Folkmans coping classification in problem- and emotional focused coping. In both cases I find a support for the models. (Less)
