Abstract
Our purpose with this essay was to examine and compare the help, that children with Asperger’s syndrome and their parents receive and have received from the Swedish welfarestate. The question we asked were: · From the parents point of view, what do they and their children need help with? · Which help have they received? We decided to divide our study into two time-periods, the time before and the time after the diagnose. To be able to answer the purpose and the questions, we chose to do interviews. We have interviewed nine parents, two fathers and seven mothers. The study showed that all of the nine parents early recognised their child’s problems and that they on their own turned to numbers of authorities for help. The most important thing... (More)

We have interviewed nine parents, two fathers and seven mothers. The study showed that all of the nine parents early recognised their child’s problems and that they on their own turned to numbers of authorities for help. The most important thing for the parents were that someone listened to them and really understood their concerns regarding their children. Most of the parents said that they wanted their child’s diagnose earlier. Since all of the children got their diagnose before the age of sixteen, the school showed to be an important part in the study. Four children get help in form of a personal assistant. Two children have applied for help, but are still waiting. (Less)
