This essay is written about how parents experiences the meaning of the child’s diagnosis within the autismspectra. We wanted to recreate a picture of feelings and reflections that the parents have with the thought of the child’s diagnosis. It is the parentperspective as the essay treats in questions as: how is autism discovered? Who gives the answer about the diagnosis and how does it feel to get such an answer? What help do the parents think that the children and the family need? And what are the parents view of the children’s future? The work is a qualitative research and is based upon semistructured interviews. These have been done with ten parents separately, eight persons who were interviewed were parenting couples. To get a theoretic support of the material in the analysis, we have chosen to use three theories. Two of them are sociological and one is psycological. The conclusion of this work is that parents of children with a diagnosis within the autismspectra have a great will to be able to confront and to support their children in a good way. The parents say that when the children got a diagnosis, it became a platform in the searching for knowledge about the children’s functional disability. (Less)
