- Abstract
- The purpose of this study has been to describe and analyse how gender is represented and passed on in 12 Swedish child- and youth magazines. We put focus on three different arias; how gender roles were passed on, which kind of problems girls and boys were ascribed and how sexuality was represented. We chose to do a qualitative study of the magazines using 11 theme questions. Our study showed that gender roles in theese magazines were mostly represented in a stereotypic way. Boys problems were related to competitions and a fear of being looked upon as physically and mentally week by the surrounding environment. Women were objectified in a high degree and their bodies shown undressed and exploited in a commercial use as were their sexuality, often with a hint to pornography. When men were portrayed as objects in relation to their sexuality the hint was instead directed towards fitness. (Less)
