- Abstract
- The purpose of this paper has been to observe and compare similarities and differences in approaches to work and providing for themselves amongst two groups of young people between the ages of 19-24, the so called generation Y, one including people who were currently out of work and therefor involved in jobseeking activities and another group who were undergraduate students of social work. We wanted to see if there were any differences between the groups in how they valued work and if this in any way coincided with their position on the job market. - The purpose of this paper has been to observe and compare similarities and differences in approaches to work and providing for themselves amongst two groups of young people between the ages of 19-24, the so called generation Y, one including people who were currently out of work and therefor involved in jobseeking activities and another group who were undergraduate students of social work. We wanted to see if there were any differences between the groups in how they valued work and if this in any way coincided with their position on the job market. We also wanted to know if education gave safety and if there were any disparities in how they viewed work in terms of their coming of age. The research methods used to arrive at our results have been group interviews with young people and comparing the results with sociological theory. This is not a representative study but a small study of tendencies in two groups of young adults. We found that there were no certain differences between our two chosen groups. Education does give a certain safety but it depends on what line of education you choose, no distinction appeared to exist in values and attitudes towards work, though the young adults that were out of work had somewhat different experiences of the job market than the students did.
