Abstract
The purpose of this essay was to illustrate the identity and the double belonging among second generation immigrants. We also wanted to illustrate the second generation immigrants view of identity, language and society. The questions asked were: How do the second generation immigrants, in our study, experience theirs identities in the two different cultures they are living in? Have the society and the surroundings any influence on the personal identity building? What meaning has the mother tongue for the interviewed persons? The purpose of this essay was to illustrate the identity and the double belonging among second generation immigrants. We also wanted to illustrate the second generation immigrants view of identity, language and society. The questions asked were: How do the second generation immigrants, in our study, experience theirs identities in the two different cultures they are living in? Identity unknown is a qualitative study of eight second generation immigrants, at the age of 18-32, who were born in Sweden and whose parents have immigrated as labour. The result of the study showed that it was difficult to say who they are and where they really belong. The language was an important part of the identity. They thought that the language was a link of contact to family and relatives. To sum up, the study showed that the second generation immigrants, that we interviewed, experienced themselves as "foreigners" in Sweden and as Swedes in foreign countries.
